The company produced its first car, a three-wheeled steam-powered vehicle, in 1889, but it was the post-war era that saw the Peugeot brand catapult in popularity. In 1974, Peugeot bought a 30% stake in Citroen and by 1975 had gained control of the company completely. The group also took over the European division of Chrysler in 1978.
Peugeot model names are based on size and number (the first number indicating size, the last number indicating model number) – a Peugeot 407 therefore being bigger and newer than the Peugeot 306.
Today, Peugeot offers an extensive range of popular vehicles starting with the Peugeot 1007, a concept car, through to MPVs and vans. Its most popular models are in the mid-size range and Peugeot has gained plaudits too for the quality of its vehicles having won the accolade of European car of the year on three occasions – the most recent being in 2002 for the Peugeot 307.
