Mazda made a breakthrough in the compact MPV market in 1999, when it introduced the Mazda Premacy. Originally, the Mazda Premacy was sold as a two- or three-row five- or seven passenger vehicle and was one of the cheapest on the market on its release. Customers had the option of both front- or all-wheel drive, and the Mazda Premacy boasted four-speed automatic transmission. The Mazda Premacy underwent a redesign in 2005 and though it is now sold solely in Europe as the Mazda5, the Mazda Premacy name lives on in Japan and through the used car market in Europe and North America.
